New publication: The omnivorous triggerfish Melichthys niger is a functional herbivore on an isolated
Atlantic oceanic island
Identifying the ecological roles and functions that organisms play in ecosystems is a challenge for researchers in
diverse areas. While some species are highly specialized, others have more plastic habits, allowing them to
perform various functions depending on the environment where they are found. One such example is the black
triggerfish Melichthys niger, which presents a plastic diet, a wide distribution and that can form large swarms in
oceanic islands. The St. Peter and St. Paul’s Archipelago (SPSPA) is one of the smallest and most isolated reef
environments in the world, because of that, fish richness is comparatively poor, which reflects the absence of some
important functional groups, such as grazing herbivores (surgeonfishes and parrotfishes). Nevertheless, M. niger is
one of the most abundant species and has the largest biomass in the area.
To test the hypothesis that highly plastic species may occupy specialized niches in the absence of potential
competitors, LECAR researchers evaluated the functional role of M. niger in SPSPA using in situ observations and
gut content analyzes. Melichthys niger feeds primarily on the epilithic algal matrix, ingesting basically organic
detritus and red and green filamentous algae, a typical feeding behavior of a grazing herbivore. In addition, the alga
Caulerpa racemosa var. peltata, one of the most iconic species of SPSPA, is an important food item but was only
consumed when it was floating in the water column detached from the substrate. Given the absence of large
grazing herbivores and the high trophic plasticity and abundance of M. niger in SPSPA, this species can be
considered as a functional herbivore and an important link between the primary producers and the higher levels in
the local trophic web.

Identificar os papeis ecológicos e funções que os organismos desempenham nos ecossistemas é um desafio
para pesquisadores de diversas áreas. Enquanto que algumas espécies são bastante especializadas, outras
possuem hábitos de vida mais plásticos o que permite que elas desempenhem diversas funções dependendo do
ambiente em que se encontram. Um exemplo é o cangulo-preto Melichthys niger, um peixe que possui uma dieta
bastante variada, uma ampla distribuição e que pode formar imensos cardumes, especialmente nas ilhas
oceânicas. O Arquipélago de São Pedro e São Paulo é um dos menores e mais isolados ambientes recifais do
mundo, com uma riqueza de peixes comparativamente pobre, o que reflete na ausência de alguns importantes
grupos funcionais, como os herbívoros pastadores (peixes-cirurgiões e peixes-papagaios). Apesar disso, M. niger
é uma das espécies mais abundantes e possui a maior biomassa no local.
Para testar a hipótese de que espécies muito plásticas podem ocupar nichos especializados na ausência de
potenciais competidores, pesquisadores do LECAR avaliaram o papel funcional de M. niger no ASPSP através de
observações in situ e análises de conteúdo alimentar. Melichthys niger busca alimento principalmente na matriz de
algas epilíticas, onde ingere basicamente detrito orgânico e algas filamentosas vermelhas e verdes, um
comportamento alimentar típico de um herbívoro pastador. Além disso, a alga Caulerpa racemosa var. peltata,
uma das espécies mais icônicas do SPSPA, foi um importante item alimentar mas só foi consumida quando
estava solta do fundo boiando na coluna d’água. Devido à ausência de grandes herbívoros e a alta plasticidade
trófica e abundância de M. niger no SPSPA, essa espécie pode ser considerada como um herbívoro funcional e um
importante elo entre os produtores primários e os níveis mais altos na teia trófica local.
