Meetings: SISBIOTA team attended the 9th Brazilian Protected Areas Congress in Florianópolis, SC (Brazil)
The IXCBUC is supported by Boticário Foundation and became the most important forum for researchers,
managers and many other society sectors, to share ideas on how to improve the goals of the protected areas in the
Brazilian National Conservation System. This congress is also the most important to discuss new
management techniques on how to deal with the many challenges for the conservation of ecosystems and
biodiversity in Brazil. The IXCBUC congregated many park managers from all around the country and made
possible the academy to sit together with them to discuss many priorities for terrestrial and marine biodiversity
management and conservation. Among different speakers, Dr. Matilda Van den Bosch made clear how
important is the value of conservation units or green spaces to human health and development. Many important
national initiatives for the ocean conservation were discussed in parallel workshops, like the PainelMar. Carlos
Ferreira and Sergio Floeter were there representing the SISBIOTA-Mar (Brazilian marine research network) and
discussing the main gains and losses from the recent large MPAs established in Brazil, during the
Symposium of Integrated Actions for Ocean Conservation.
