Large and remote marine protected areas in the South Atlantic Ocean are flawed and raise concerns

A team of 27 scientists, including three members of LECAR Lab, published a comment in Marine Policy addressing
a paper that discloses the new marine protected areas as good news for marine conservation in South Atlantic.

They were critical of recently created “marine protected areas” in Brazil. They criticize (1) top-down decision making
(2) allowing fishing in no-take areas and (3) counting these areas towards Aichi Target 11.
